Over the years of being in business for myself as a hair dresser, I know all too well how at some point we get to a place in our career that we get comfortable.

At times, it’s hard not to become complacent. We start to relax in our role because what we have been doing in the past, to some degree, is easy. It’s been working for the mos…t part so we stay the course rather than stepping it up.

There are instances that I have been guilty of it as well. However, I am here to remind you that you should never allow yourself to become complacent. I have learned the hard way that not staying up on your game can cost you big time.

It’s so important to appreciate your talents and make it a priority to sharpen your skills. Take the time to learn new techniques. Review new ideas that are becoming a trend in your field. Keep it fresh! There are always new things out there that you can learn.

There are a lot of excuses we can come up with for staying in our routine. However, I don’t care how good you are or how busy you are; it’s extremely important to stay humble and open minded in order to broaden your knowledge base.

If you aren’t learning, you aren’t growing. So, continue to learn from anyone and anything that might help you to develop your abilities at a higher level.
Don’t fall into the rut of complacency. Being complacent paves a path for you to be lazy and lose your desire to learn.

Everything in business and life is constantly changing. Historically there have been many big companies that closed their doors because they refused to change. This contentment opened the gate for newer companies. While the old companies were stuck in the mud, not willing to change, the new competitors were breaking ground on exciting trends.

I recommend, if you are a Salon Professional, a business person or a small business owner, enroll yourself in as many classes as you can. Educate yourself with hands on classes, new product classes and business classes. Continue to make yourself better. If you are already good at what you do, you will become great at what you do!

Keep putting challenges in front of yourself. Strive to become great. Use your talent rather than lose your talent. Knowledge is empowering and energizing, and your clients will appreciate it!
